Role of Beetroot Supplementation on Liver Health

Beetroot has been a well researched ingredient for athletic performance, however recent studies show that it has potential benefits as a functional food in promoting liver health. One such benefit is improving and supporting the function of the liver. Liver is the only organ in the human body that is capable of cleansing and eliminating the toxins. It is also responsible for maintaining the body’s metabolism by regulating blood glucose levels, storing excess glucose as glycogen and also metabolizing and storing fats. On a daily basis, our body undergoes several processes which may result in the build up of toxins, oxidative stress and inflammatory markers. The liver filters and eliminates these toxins and maintains a healthy equilibrium of the body.

Beetroot as a dietary intervention contains several compounds that support liver function. It is packed with a unique antioxidant called betalain which acts as a natural blood purifier. It binds and hooks up with toxins and converts them to water soluble molecules which is then eliminated by the kidneys. It also contains other antioxidants like vitamin C, which improve blood purification and also boosts metabolism. This in turn improves glutathione production which is an endogenous antioxidant secreted by the liver. Betalain along with glutathione has shown to improve the detoxification process by converting toxic particles to non toxic particles. The presence of nitrates in beetroot helps improve blood circulation and enhances efficient removal of toxins from the body through a process called vasodilation. Beetroot also contains betaine, a hepatoprotective compound that helps reduce accumulation of fat in the liver thereby reducing the risk of Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. It also improves secretion of liver enzymes and stimulates the flow of bile which helps to break down fat. In addition, betaine also helps reduce chronic inflammation, oxidative stress and improves immune response. With such amazing holistic properties, beetroot becomes an important superfood and a valuable addition to our daily routine. Simply consume beetroot in the form of a salad or steamed or as a juice to protect your liver and optimize health!
